Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake in the world, and it is located in Russia, in Eastern Siberia. It contains roughly 1/5 of all of the world's fresh water (lakebaikal.org, 2014). Lake Baikal is a great source of Russian pride, as many locals see it as a large part of their culture and heritage. Despite its sanctity, the Lake has been facing problems brought about by climate change over the past decades (lakebaikal.org, 2014). Increased winter temperatures threaten the longevity of the ice, which is essential for the Baikal Seal's breeding (lakebaikal.org 2014). Lack of ice also threatens the overall ecology of the lake, as the disruption of the seal population poses a host of problems for all the other organisms in the Lake.
